I've probably already written a blog post with this title of "Sweetest Guy," but dang, Matthew really fits the title.
Don't get me wrong, we have our days when he's more "three-year-old" than others and less cooperative than I'd like, but with the level of sweetness he delivers, most days it evens out by the end to a good cutie guy day.
Tonight, he told us that today he'd been to "Tub Wash, Bed Wash" with Gigi. In case you don't know, that's Bed, Bath and Beyond. We figured it out and said the name, so now he's changed what he calls it (sadly), but still comically, to "Tub Wash and Beyond."
But last week, Matthew finished up his two-year-old class school year. We had an assistant teacher change probably three months ago. Ms. Alex sadly had to leave to focus more on her school work, but we loved having Mrs. Elizabeth join Mrs. Suzie. Matthew loved all of his teachers this year -- and they loved him, too! I think the regular cheek kisses helped win them over, along with his regular following of the rules! He never had a bad day according to his teachers. We never had to have a talk or a conference, and it's great to hear that he can do what he's asked in class. On a regular basis, I found him sitting in Mrs. Suzie's lap as she read to him when I came for pick-up.
He grew a lot this year!
And with his photos, Matthew insisted that we get photos of his lunchbox, which he insists on personally carrying each day, in the photos with him. It was great for swinging around and causing the photos to be somewhat blurry!
After plenty of photos, we did make it to school. I hold his hand as always, as we walk through the parking lot. It is so soft, just the right amount of "squeezable" and trusting. Just after we reach the sidewalk, he pulls it from my hand to run into school. As we reach his classroom, we see that not only are the teachers in their cute Hawaiian wear for the luau, but also, it's another student's birthday in the class! Matthew is ready to have another great day, plus it's party time. He goes straight for the toys that are laid out for him, and as usual, is not interested in a goodbye to his loving mama.
And before I know it, I'm turning from the classroom, stepping out the door, and my eyes are full of tears. I sniff them in as I leave, and swallow a gulp. But then I'm okay.
I know my sweetest guy has had a great year, and it's wonderful to see his growth. We were so lucky to have Mrs. Suzie again, and again, while Matthew would say goodbye to neither of his teachers, or get a photo with him, it's consistent with his style.
A forward-thinking, future-focused outlook will serve him well. And yes, we did get a special Frosty treat after school!
As a parent, of course you always worry, but we have (practically) no worries about Matthew Bennett Gordon.
