Here We Come a-Wassailing

Before I get to the good stuff, let me just say that I cannot wait for "Les Miserables" and Anne Hathaway's hair is adorable right now as it's growing out.

In another pop culture tidbit, have you seen that Jenna Bush Hager is pregnant?! Kate and now Jenna! Now, I bet Jenna's farther along than Kate, and I also bet that she might just be the teensiest bit jealous that she didn't get to announce it first since Kate has been so sick so baby Hager might have had a little more chance for some time in the sun before the royal baby news. Ha!

The title of the post is because we had a delightful time bringing some Christmas goodies to our neighbors last night (and I'm using all Christmas carols for my titles this month, if you've noticed...)

Libby has been full of quips and quotes this week, let me tell ya! I wish I could write them ALL down as she says them, but I do what I can. She's in a current mode of asking me, "You all done?" about any task that I'm right in the middle of. Funny stuff!

She also started putting her cheeks on the top of my slippers (with my feet in them) and loving and petting them. I asked her what she was doing and she said helping my toes feel better. "They must be tired and hurting at the end of the day." So I asked why she thought that and her reply? "They're not new." "The way yours are are new?" "Deppy!"

Last night, we wade lasagna for dinner tonight and to take to Nadine and Michael since they have their hands full with Finn! So, she was helping me make it; stirring the cheese mixture, layering the... layers? and I promised her that she could taste the meaty tomato scrapings from the skillet when we were finished with everything else. (She loves to taste every ingredient possible). So she was digging in to the skillet at the end and had done a thorough job of cleaning it up. I asked if she was finished and started to take it away to clean her up and she told me she wasn't finished. "Look at this spoon!" To be fair, she could definitely get another bite or to from it (and trust me, she make sure it was CLEAN before I was allowed to take it back.) Hmm, another way she takes after her Mama.

Yesterday we also got to take Gigi to the zoo!

Libby's favorite parts? The playground areas and the train. Of course, she loved the meerkats and bush dogs as always and spent a lot of time with the snakes and reptiles. She can always find them even when the blend so well that I have trouble! It turned in to sort of a game where she would try to find them fastest. But it wasn't much of a game since she nearly always found them first!

Her other special surprise was that we got to "eat out at a restaurant!" And Gigi chose mexican, so Libby was extra happy, dipping her chips in lots of salsa, eating her cheese quesadilla and enjoying some black beans, too.

Today while Libby was at school, I had to run in to work, but I also got to meet Mr. Finn Doyle! (No photos.) Holding that tiny, 7 lb. newborn was so sweet. Seeing my friend, a new mom, discovering motherhood, brought back a lot of not-so-distant memories. I hope that I can be helpful to her in the next few months. I was lucky to have the support group of mom and mother-in-law, in addition to Michael, of course, my aunt, and other family and friends! I thrived on human interaction in those early weeks. Whew. I could write a bunch more blogs posts just on this - but just go back to the January '10 entries for what was going on at the time! Anyway, we can't wait to spend more time with Finn and I look forward to introducing Libby to him soon, also.

We've been on our own this week, but Michael's making a special trip home tonight even though he has to go all the way back out of town tomorrow just to spend some extra time with Miss B.

Last night, while I was finishing up some stuff around the house, I flipped on Barbara Walters' "10 Most Fascinating People of 2012" special. I don't know the last time I watched that thing, but I'm sure I have before. Our awesome Olympic Gold champion, 16 year-old Gabby Douglas, was one of the individuals featured and she was interviewed, along with her mom. Her mother raised her and her older sister alone and sacrificed mightily for her girls', and especially Gabby's, future. I knew this before, but hearing them talk directly again about Gabby telling her mother at the age of 11, that she needed to move away from home to train for her dreams, and her mom talking about allowing it... made me cry. They both said it was worth it and I feel like I'd do anything to help Libby achieve anything she sets out to do, but boy, I really can't imagine what that was like for her mother. Gabby seems to be an extremely  mature young lady, and it's not surprising considering her devotion and how she had to grow up for her dreams, but. Boy. Is she mature. I don't know that I want Libby to have to be that responsible, that quickly, even on the tougher days. (And the tough days really aren't that tough- they just mean that she needs some sleep. Like today.)

This afternoon, she came home from school crabby and extra-stubborn, and bursting into tears when it was uncalled for. So she went to nap almost immediately. It can be so frustrating when she acts up for me, because she rarely, if ever, seems to with other people. But I thought back on Gabby and her mom (they were kind of funny with some of the comments). I thought about my relationship with my mom. You only hurt the ones you love, right? And it's wonderful that she feels like she can always be herself with me. She knows I love her no matter what. I hope she always feels like she can "act up" with me. I'd rather it be with me than a teacher, a grandma, a babysitter or a friend. I'm lucky to get to be there for the good moments and the bad. Crabby is a blessing!
