Now, snow is quickly becoming old hat for Libby Gordon. She's seen it at least three times already (plus a few flurries) and Monday made it four. I am concerned that she will grow to not be able to appreciate it properly.
I very clearly and distinctly remember my first snow. I grew up in Charleston, S.C., where it never snows. But I remember when I was five, I was on the way to school in my mom's car and these tiny pieces of light white sand kind of floating on the breeze and a some hitting the front windshield of the car. I knew deep down what it was. But I was afraid that if I said it out loud, somehow it wouldn't be real. Cautiously, I asked mom what that white stuff was. SNOW! Just a flurry and apparently none of it stuck, as I recall no photos taken of this momentous occasion (and I promise, even the smallest occasions were documented on film). But I remember it well. And I remember the few times that it snowed after we moved to Augusta. Our back yard there was perfect for sledding (or red, round disk-sliding).
Well, Libby has "been there, done that, had the White Christmas" since she was first born. But we documented it again yesterday as we bundled up and trudged into the crunchy white cold in what is probably the biggest snow I've ever seen and hey, the biggest snow Libby's ever seen, too! (Please excuse the shaking early in the video - it gets better).
Commissioner was far less than impressed. And remained so today, venturing outside only when forced.
We didn't last long, but Libby's not quite at the age to appreciate it yet. While it may be "old hat" to her already, I sure do wish that she could enjoy it more!
But based on her history, I don't think this will be her last shot at it!
Today was more snow and due to the continued freezing temperatures, not much has melted. It is expected to ice up again tonight. Therefore, I've been at home and so has Michael. He's been doing a lot of work and I'm able to log in to my work computer from here, so I've done a bit, too. However, with Atlanta basically shut down, there hasn't been too much to do since my boss hasn't been able to get out much either. We're just playing the waiting game to see just how long this lasts.
I've already finished my book for next week's book club - a whole week early! So I get to start a pleasure book next. My "to do" list seems extraordinarily short each day this week and I'm finding myself spacing out my tasks a bit to fill the time. I've been able to relax more with Libby at the house since we haven't had anywhere to go. Today was supposed to be her one year doctor's appointment, but we couldn't get out and the office was closed. I ventured out once this afternoon to walk to the mailbox and just to get out of the house. And it was an adventure! I slipped a few times trying to get there, but was careful and made it back inside with no injuries.
I am all caught up with saving photos and videos, with blogging, with laundry and ironing. I vacuumed today. Perhaps I'll mop tomorrow? I also reorganized the pantry to the best of my ability. It was a nightmare and something I'd planned to do next week, but I'm glad that it's done. I'm also glad that I cooked like a nut the week before last in preparation for leaving last week. We have more than enough food to make it for probably another week at least - and I'm not even talking about getting into junk. I mean quality food. We may run a bit short on veggies by then, but Libby would still have hers and we could make it. Folks, is that a blessing or what? Going through my refrigerator and pantry and knowing that I don't have to worry about putting food on the table ever, but even during a potential "emergency" is truly a blessing.
Since we couldn't get out again today, I thought we'd put one of Libby's new movies to use. I popped Mary Poppins into the DVD player while Libby was playing to show her her very first full-length feature film. Obviously she didn't really watch it. We played and read... and Daddy took her on many trips around the house in her wagon during it, too, but she did stop what she was doing to watch one scene. It was exactly the scene I expected, too - inside the chalk drawing with Bert dancing with the penguins. She loved it and watched intently until that part was over. Too cute!
I half expect to see penguins here every time I look out the window!

I really enjoy reading your blog. You're SO good at keeping up with it! Makes me want to get better at writing regular entries. Libby is so so cute!
ReplyDeleteWhat book?
ReplyDeleteSnow is so fun. I think it's a big part of the reason I wanted to come to Wyoming--that it's so wonderful when Atlanta gets it I wanted to be around it more. Even though it's not a big deal here, I still love it.
