One More Before FOUR!

Well, as I write this on Jan. 7, 2014, it is something like 2 degrees outside. Literally. I'm wearing Michael's long johns under my pants and when I've gone outside, I've been bundled head-to-toe in my down puffer parka, complete with (fake) fur collar and fur-lined hood, fleece gloves, etc. and I can only stay out a few minutes at a time. Poor Commissioner with her shaved fur, scar, bare foot pads and metal staples in her back! Her rehab is actually going quite well, fortunately.

Matthew's first snow was yesterday, too. It flurried just a little in the morning and Libby went out for a few minutes to inspect ice frozen in various things and jumping on trampoline IN THE SNOW! Extra special. And schools were closed the last two days, so her first day back from vacation will be Thursday, when it's a special day already because they'll be celebrating her birthday! We get to bring treats for snack time and she's chosen Munchkins from Dunkin Donuts again. Hmm... Mommy may have to get a treat when we pick those up, too.

Matthew also has officially started laughing! First time was last Friday, Jan. 3, 2014. Libby spent the night out at Gigi and Papa's house that night and Matthew and I joined her for the day on Saturday. We got to have a delicious lunch and Matthew got to meet some of Gigi's friends for the first time. Sweetness! Michael and Papa went to Birmingham for the day for Vanderbilt's bowl game - that they happily won.

Back to the laugh: Matthew was watching "Pitch Perfect" with Michael and me (yes, we got to sit and watch an entire movie!) (Also last week, I watched, "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" over several sessions.) The part was on where students are auditioning for the a cappella groups and I started making the noises and tickling his sweet neck and under his arms and he laughed! It happened several times and was a true joy to my heart and ears. He's done it at various times when I've tried ever since. I just can't get enough. He's also blowing bubbles, experimenting with his voice/noises and reaching specifically for objects and moving them to his mouth and so forth. Major milestones! And Libby tells us that she wants, "all his hugs." I mean- what a big sister!

Meanwhile, I'm weaning him during the daytime and this has not happened without plenty of tears (from me). As long as he's eating, he pretty much doesn't care where it comes from or how it gets there. We've been slowly moving his bedtime earlier, too. So mixed with moving to the bottle and not really knowing just how much he needs to eat during the day, it's a big experiment time. He's eating at least 8 oz. when he has his bottles. Sometimes he still wants to eat at 4 or 5 a.m. and sometimes not. One never knows, so you'd better get to bed shortly after he goes! Michael's often able to soothe him if he cries for a few minutes before that because he needs a burping or just some patting or what have you.

Libby has been an absolute delight in the last few days. Also, hungry and a bit tired, so I think she's growth spurting again - just in time for FOUR YEARS OLD! My big girl turns four tomorrow. She really ought to still be Matthew's size and in the baby swing. Instead, she's often like a little mother to him. She hands me his bottle, wants to oversee diaper changes, plays with him, loves on him and is such a doll. I tell Matthew constantly how lucky he is to have Libby for his big sister. Party preparations are underway for Saturday. I've cried a bunch this week and last weekend between the weaning of Matthew for during the work day hours and Libby turning four and going back to work. Kind of the perfect storm, no?

Libby has requested waffles for her birthday dinner (how cute is that?!) and cereal for breakfast. I think I'm going to run out first thing in the morning for something extra special, though.

I'm so proud of my beautiful, funny, strong, talented, imaginative, loving, independent and sensitive big girl. I hate that she's growing up so fast, except for the part where I love every age better than the last. It give me reassurance for "Mathy boy" as she calls him, too. 'Cause I love the age he's at right now. But I think back to how often I have said that about Libby and the ages get better all the time. Oh how I love my B!

She's having a Mickey Mouse and Disney friends birthday party on Saturday and we can't wait. I hope the cake and cupcakes turn out how I have them in my mind! But we shall see... even how Friday goes when I have to make them. Whew.
