College Weekend

Last weekend, Libby and I got to visit Athens, Ga., and my alma mater, UGA, with my longtime roomie Aunt Mandy, my mom.

We had a blast! From probably Wednesday on, Mandy and I were texting about mow much we were looking forward to our little getaway, and wondering if we could simply hit the road right away!

Eventually, we made it all the way to Saturday at noon, when Mimi arrived. Libby and I tossed our packed lunches and all of our suitcases in the car and zipped over to pick up Aunt Mandy, who was literally standing in the driveway with her stuff, ready to hit the road!

In our dust, we left behind her dudes, Diddy, and of course Michael and Matthew, who were back at our house while the electrician finished up installing a fan in our guest room. Matthew was very chatty with them and possibly could install our next light fixture all by himself, based on what he learned!

CUTE MATTHEW STORY INTERRUPTION: On Sunday after we got back, Matthew and I were cuddling and having a chat. He pointed to his forehead and told me what it was called, then at the top  of his head and asked what it was called. I let him know that it is called the "crown" of your head." He looks at me, tilts his head, and asks, "No, what number?" (You know, if one part is the "four"head, then, perhaps this would be the "five"head.)

Back to Athens. We arrived mostly uneventfully, got checked in to our downtown hotel as quickly as humanly possible, adjusted the thermostat in the room and ran-walked to Walker's Pub for some festive beverages before the Gym Dogs meet! Libby discovered a love for cherry Italian soda!

We used our same stealth parking spot this week as last for the meet, too. This is a good spot to be aware of, so major thanks to Kristi for that last week.

Libby understood more about what to expect this week, and she and Mimi had a fun time together cheering on our team.

Libby even got shakers this time, and they definitely helped with our spirit level.

The team honored our national champion teams and many former gymnastics athletes who had competed or coached on behalf of the university, including legendary 26-year coach (including during my time) Suzanne Yoculan Leebern (Bio here) and assistant coach Doug McAvinn. It was also the last home meet and therefore, Senior Day, so there were some special honors for our senior year athletes. Plus, their moms get the prime seating spot on the couch next to the  judges for the floor exercise. Very touching when the girls hugged their moms after the first routine was complete.

And did I mention that we won?! We beat #5 ranked Utah pretty handily... leading throughout the meet. It was awesome! Bbut by the time the meet was over, it was probably time for dinner... but instead we went over to The Place for a quick beverage and to meet Drew and Ben! Ben was bartending, so we didn't get a lot of visiting time since everyone conference, wedding and ordination was evidently in town this weekend while the students were away on spring break. He did make us some of his specialty cocktails however, including a Coke for Libby. While mildly disappointed that her glass didn't include one of of the niftier ice cubes, she loved seeing the huge round cube in Drew's drink and the huge square one in mine.

Time for food!

After that we traipsed across downtown to The Last Resort for dinner. However, it was apparently first-choice for MANY that evening, since the wait for our table of five was an hour and a half... AT LEAST. Back to Broad street it was, and after a short wait at the ever-popular and tasty DePalma's, we were seated, got some incredibly tasty bread and ordered our yummy dinners. Libby was very happy to have some pepperoni pizza, while the rest of us were a bit more adventurous with our choices.

Photos: Then (2003 -- Drew's 22nd birthday) and now (March 2017) -- we have only improved with age, right?!

When we girls got back to our hotel room, it was late, but not too late for a game of Uno, which we brought to enhance the party for Libby. Plus, she got the giggles right at bedtime, which was precious. She got over them pretty quickly though and SACKED OUT.

AND it was "spring forward" night, so we slept in a bit... even if it didn't feel like it.

After a leisurely getting ready and check-out, we froze our tails off as we walked over to The Place for brunch. Well, Mandy and I made a pit stop for some bagels to bring home first. Libby loved the whipped cream on her french toast and the giant Mason jar of cranberry juice! There wasn't a wait because it wasn't 12:30 p.m. (boozy brunch time) yet, so we had lots more time to talk and relax. Libby may have also played some Solitare on my mom's phone, winning once or twice, too!

We also zipped over to the UGA Arch for a photo underneath it -- something we never have done since we both graduated!

And then we were off again to get back home to our boys. We missed them!

It was an awesome weekend to get together. I'm so glad that we did it, and I think we all feel that way. The only thing missing... was our guys... and of course, Millie! We were so sorry to miss her, but are so proud of what she used her spring break time and money to do.

After we got home, we had another epic Uno round with Libby, who eventually won the game (we were all relieved). Plus, mom and I had a few ideas about the living room...

Really makes the room seem bigger, huh?! Just a few more things in there to take care of.
