While Michael and the kids enjoyed their Chick-fil-A dinner, and Matthew's Ice Dream was too cold...
Mom and I made our way to hip Midtown.
We enjoyed Mom's birthday dinner at Tamarind Seed, enjoying cocktails and a yummy dinner. Then, it was off to Atlanta Symphony Hall! Second time in as many weeks for Cheryl. This time though, there was no three year-old, and it was a good thing, because "Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs" is a cabaret show that just wasn't the right entertainment for a three year-old.
I didn't look up a bunch of information before However, we loved the show. Great stories -- some funny, some so sad and personal. There's even a CD from his performance at the Cafe Carlyle in New York. We really did enjoy his interpretation of songs we knew, and we enjoyed hearing some different ones, too. His Scottish accent was excellent for the ballads, especially. And by the way, he also has two books!
On Saturday, we got to enjoy a special guest. Sadly, Sarah wasn't feeling well and up for a visit, but we got to watch sweet Luca for a few hours.
We were so glad to actually help. Luca got a little bit sad after he realized that his Mama was gone, but really, he just needed a nap. Michael pushed us in the swing and he fell asleep, face mushed into my chest and arm, and stayed asleep for probably 45 minutes. So precious.
This big boy can sit up on his own, and he loves to jump up and down while we hold onto him, eat and smile. The kids had a ton of information to share with him and tricks to show him on the swing and trampoline. He even got to go for a little walk! We loved having him with us. Oh, and his head smells amazing. And how about that whoofie hair?!
After Luca left with his grandparents, we rounded up the kids to head down to the Georgia Dome for the final event there. The greatest of all: Monster Jam! This special event was a gift for the kids' Christmas.
We planned to eat at the CNN Center, but it was such a madhouse down there that we decided to eat at the Dome instead. With pizza and popcorn, then the kids were pretty happy. Later in the event, we had to get the cotton candy too. But we saw some impressive racing and maneuvering, too!
Matthew had been talking about it for days ahead of the Monster Jam. But Libby was more "into" it. She loved the competition. And of course, the crashes and wild things were the best.
Several had to be hauled off after their crashes, and one caught on fire. Fortunately, the drivers each walked away unharmed.
There was also a grease fire in one of the kitchens, so I guess a fitting end to the Dome? The kids' favorite car was the Hot Wheels car, but I have to admit that the "Monster" brand Monster truck was probably the best. But Hot Wheels did do a complete flip, and then a half flip, landing on its' roof and catching on fire.
The kids are still talking about it. Though Libby apparently didn't find it worthwhile to share this big event with her friends at school at all.
On Sunday, the excitement continued. Matthew and Michael enjoyed some guy time at home -- taking Commish on a long walk and having a picnic at the playground.
Libby and I picked up Kristi and Ansley Fuller early and made our way to Athens for lunch at The Grit and a Gym Dogs meet against the University of Alabama. Bama was ranked #6 and we were at #8 going into the meet.
Well... probably the rankings remained about the same after the meet. Both teams were impressive, but Bama did indeed seem to have the edge throughout.
The girls kept asking about score updates and keeping close tabs on who was winning. Ansley's favorite apparatus to watch is the uneven parallel bars, while Libby prefers the floor routine. I'm impressed with them all, but I think bars and beam are the tops for me. Both cutie girls were sweet all day, and we treated them (and ourselves) to some Jittery Joe's treats before scooting out of town.
It was great to spend some quality time with half of the Fullers, and especially with my girl. Kristi and I had a ton of needed "catch up" time in the car and throughout the day, which was really nice. Our friendship would not be the same (or exist?!) without our UGA connection.
I can't wait to do Athens again this weekend!
