School Days

(Written mainly on Tues., Aug. 21, 2012 - Finished on Aug. 23, 2012)

Have begun.

Today was the first day of school.

We got started this morning with maple baked oatmeal for breakfast. She didn't seem to be the biggest fan ever, but she ate it. (I loved it!)

Daddy stayed late to be with us and help Libby in her morning preparations and then we got the obligatory photos.

There was a lot of this!

Ugh- MORE pictures?!

Daddy left and so did we - chatting the whole way!

Libby walked right in, not holding my hand, head held high (right after this photo).

Until she would barely let go when I hugged her good-bye. Crying ensued. (Hers.) I got teary-eyed driving away when Michael called to check on everything, but other than a feeling of emptiness mixed with pride, I was okay. I had a TON of errands to take care of and they were good distractions.

I was the first mom there to pick her up (first mom of any classes, I think.) I didn't want to get there late and overshot by a few minutes. I got to the parking lot about 20 minutes early and sat in the car, listening to her requested Barry Manilow that we listened to on the way in to school.

I went in a few minutes early and her class was still on the playground. She walked in, saw me and came running with a HUGE hug! "Mama's here," she said. She's actually saying that a lot this week to sort of reassure herself I guess. She's still slept well all week, but not quite as much as one would have expected. I think she's been just a little anxious about going to sleep.

Anyway, Ms. Lisa told me that she had a great day and really came out during music class (happy Mommy!) She had no potty accidents (none on Thursday, either). They did an art project and brought a project home for us to work on here. (That's the house cut-out below.) You can see that the color of the day was red (and today's color was yellow- she colored a school bus. Apparently they talked a little bit about their families on the first day and Libby raised her hand about having a dog. (Surprise, surprise!) Crackers for a snack on Tuesday; pretzels today.

Today she cried when we got to the class and one girl was already having a meltdown. I think she would have been a lot better off if that hadn't happened. Ms. Lori said she was a little quiet today, but did okay. Ms. Lori also asked how I was holding up. I thought I was doing really quiet well - except that when she asked that I got a little choked up!)

Libby ate a decent bit of her lunch both days (not great, but I didn't expect her to "clean her bowls.") I give her a snack on the way home to help make sure she had enough to eat and to help keep her awake. This week, keeping her awake on that ride hasn't been a problem, though. She doesn't volunteer a lot of information, but I get tidbits each day. I obviously ask a lot of questions. Today they worked on matching colors/shapes, etc. and she was doing that on her own this afternoon and telling me that they matched. I asked about whether that was something they did in class and it was! She's also good about lining up on the green line and following one behind the other student to "go upstairs" to music class and back.

She's really handled it well and we are so proud of her. All those kids are just adorable and so far I'm quite happy with the school. I can't wait to see what other exciting things she learns in the coming weeks and months!

What a big girl.
